Universal Height Requirements at All Four US Parks
The complete height chart for Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, Epic Universe and Universal Studios Hollywood, plus what each threshold actually buys you.
There are 42 operating attractions with published numerical height minimums across the four US Universal parks in this guide. That number is the single most useful thing to know before you book, because Universal's rides skew harder and taller than the ones down the road, and a child who has a full day at Magic Kingdom can run out of things to ride here by lunchtime.
The range runs from 34 inches to 54 inches. The crowding is at 40: 14 attractions sit at exactly that stick, more than at any other number, and clearing it takes a child from 10 numerically height-cleared rides to 24. Other rider rules still apply, including supervising-companion requirements. If you are travelling with someone close to 40 inches, that inch is worth more than any other planning decision you will make.
Measure at home before you go, in the shoes your child will actually wear, and measure honestly. Universal measures at the entrance to each attraction and will re-measure at the load platform if a team member is unsure. Being turned away at the front of a 70-minute queue is a bad afternoon, and it is entirely avoidable.
This chart contains attractions with a verified numerical minimum. An attraction missing from it may have no numerical minimum, an unverified rule, or another type of rider restriction. Check Universal's current attraction rules before making a boarding promise.
The short version
- 40 inches is the decisive threshold: 14 attractions sit at exactly that height, and clearing it unlocks 14 numerical minimums in one step.
- Under 40 inches, 10 of the 42 attractions with published numerical minimums are height-cleared across all four parks combined; other rider rules still apply.
- Islands of Adventure has the tallest sticks anywhere at Universal, topping out at 54 inches.
- Flight of the Hippogriff has a different requirement in Orlando than in Hollywood. Two parks, one ride name, two numbers.
- Universal measures at each attraction entrance, and will re-measure at the platform. Measure at home first, in shoes.
- Child Swap exists at every attraction with a height requirement, so one adult never has to sit out the whole day.
- An attraction missing from the numerical-minimum chart is not automatically unrestricted; check its current rider rules.
Every height requirement at Universal Orlando
32 operating attractions across the three Orlando parks carry a published numerical minimum after Rip Ride Rockit closed in August 2025. Epic Universe figures and day-to-day restrictions should still be checked against Universal's app.

Every height requirement at Universal Studios Hollywood
10 operating attractions at the California park carry a height requirement, including Hollywood Drift at 51 inches. The park is smaller, so a child who misses a threshold here misses a larger share of the day than they would in Orlando.
The Studio Tour, which is the reason most people come, has no height requirement at all. That is the single most important line on this page for a family with a small child.
| Park | Attraction | Minimum height |
|---|---|---|
| Universal Studios Hollywood | The Secret Life of Pets: Off the Leash | 34 in |
| Universal Studios Hollywood | Flight of the Hippogriff | 39 in |

What each threshold actually unlocks
Height charts usually stop at listing the numbers. The useful question is what changes when a child crosses each one, because that is what decides whether a trip is worth taking this year or next.
The jump at 40 inches is the one that matters. Below it a child clears 10 of the 42 published numerical minimums. At 40 they clear 24; supervising-companion and other rider rules still apply. Nothing else on the chart moves the number that far in one step.
| Height | Attractions at this stick | Numerical minimums cleared at this height |
|---|---|---|
| 34 in | 3 | 3 |
| 36 in | 6 | 9 |
| 39 in | 1 | 10 |
| 40 in | 13 | 23 |
| 42 in | 5 | 28 |

| 48 in | 8 | 37 |

How Universal measures, and how to measure at home
Team members measure at the entrance to each attraction using a fixed stick, and may measure again at the load platform. There is no wristband system that carries a measurement across the park, so a child near a threshold will be measured repeatedly through the day and can be passed at one attraction and stopped at another.
At home, measure against a wall with the shoes on, heels flat, standing straight rather than stretching. Then subtract nothing. Rounding up half an inch because a child was almost there is how families end up arguing with a teenager holding a measuring stick, and the teenager is going to win.
Thick-soled shoes genuinely help and are entirely legitimate — a child is measured in what they are wearing. Hair does not count, and a team member will press it down.
If someone in your group is too short
Child Swap is available at every attraction with a height requirement. One adult waits with the child in a designated area while the rest of the party rides, then they swap without queueing again. It works, it is well signposted, and it is the reason a height restriction does not have to cost an adult the whole ride.
The harder truth is about which park to visit at all. A child under 40 inches will find substantially more to do at Magic Kingdom than at Islands of Adventure, and no amount of shows and character meets closes that gap. If that describes your group, the honest advice is to do Universal in a later year rather than to do it badly now.

Frequently asked questions
What is the lowest height requirement at a Universal park?
34 inches. Below that, a child is limited to shows, play areas, character meets and the walk-through environments, which at Universal is a thinner offering than at the Disney parks.
Which Universal attraction has the tallest height requirement?
The tallest stick across the four US parks is 54 inches, at Islands of Adventure. Universal's thrill tier begins around where Disney's tops out, which is the single biggest structural difference between the two operators for a family.
Why does Flight of the Hippogriff have a different height in Hollywood?
Because it is a different installation. The two parks run separate versions of the ride with separate requirements, and a family that plans from the Orlando number will be caught out in California. Always check the figure for the park you are actually visiting.
Does Universal measure at every ride?
Yes. Measurement happens at each attraction entrance and can be repeated at the load platform. There is no park-wide wristband, so a child near a threshold will be measured many times in a day.
Can my child wear thicker shoes to clear a height requirement?
Yes. Guests are measured in the shoes they are wearing, and there is nothing improper about choosing a pair with a thicker sole. Hair is pressed down and does not count.
What happens if one parent is left out because a child is too short?
Use Child Swap. It exists at every attraction with a height requirement, and it lets both adults ride without queueing twice. Ask at the attraction entrance rather than assuming you have to work it out yourself.
Is the Studio Tour height-restricted?
No. The Studio Tour at Universal Studios Hollywood has no minimum height, which makes it the anchor of a day there for families with small children.
An attraction is missing a height on this page. Does that mean it has none?
No. It means we could not verify one and would rather say nothing than state a number we are not sure of. Confirm it with Universal before you plan around it.
