Minion Land at Universal Studios

Minion Land opened in 2023 on the strip of the park that used to hold Shrek 4-D and the plaza around Despicable Me Minion Mayhem. It is loud, saturated and pitched squarely at children under about ten, and it is the busiest bottleneck in the front of the park because everybody walks through it on the way in.

Despicable Me Minion Mayhem is the older of the two attractions: a motion-base simulator in front of a 3D screen, 40 inches to ride, with stationary seating available for anyone who does not want the motion. Illumination's Villain-Con Minion Blast joined it in 2023 and is a different animal — a walk-through shooting gallery on a moving walkway, no height requirement, no motion base, and by some distance the most accessible attraction in this park for a small child or a guest who cannot transfer.

The land's food is better than the theming suggests. Minion Cafe is a large air-conditioned quick-service with a bakery counter, and it absorbs a lot of the front-of-park lunch demand that would otherwise queue somewhere worse.

The thing to know about Villain-Con Minion Blast is that the posted wait is misleading in both directions. It is a continuously loading walkthrough, so a 40-minute board often clears in 20; but on quiet mornings it is a walk-on and worth doing immediately.

Minion Land tips

Ask for stationary seating at Minion Mayhem if simulators are a problem. It is a real option, it is granted without argument, and the ride still works from a still seat.
Villain-Con Minion Blast scores are stored to your park ticket, so a second run genuinely builds on the first. Scan in with the same ticket both times.
This land is the front-of-park chokepoint between about 10am and noon. If you are crossing to Diagon Alley, cut through Production Central instead.
Minion Cafe has far more indoor seating than the queue implies. It is a reasonable place to sit out a downpour even if you only buy a drink.

A 3D motion simulator that turns you into a Minion for five minutes, with stationary seating for anyone who wants the film without the throwing about.

Minion Mayhem opened in 2012 in what used to be the Jimmy Neutron theatre and it is a straightforward large-theatre motion simulator: rows of benches on a motion base facing a big 3D screen. Gru recruits you into his family, you are turned into a Minion, and things go wrong in the way they go wrong in these films.

Tips for Despicable Me Minion Mayhem

Ask for stationary seating if anyone in your group is under 40 inches or wary of the motion. It is a genuine option, it is at the back, and the film is identical.
There is a single rider line, and because the theatre seats in benches it moves faster than most people expect.
Do not ride this in sequence with Transformers or The Simpsons Ride. Space them out or you will discover the limit the hard way.
Sit toward the middle of the theatre rather than the extreme sides. The 3D alignment falls apart at the edges of the front rows.
The exit dance party is not skippable in practice with young children. Factor five extra minutes into the visit.

Illumination's Villain-Con Minion Blast

Villain-Con Minion Blast opened in 2023 in the building that held Shrek 4-D, and it is structurally unlike anything else at Universal Orlando. There is no vehicle. You stand on a slow-moving walkway holding a handheld blaster and shoot targets on screens as they pass, working through a series of rooms with a running score.

Tips for Illumination's Villain-Con Minion Blast

The posted wait overstates it. This loads continuously, so a 40-minute board frequently clears in 20. Judge it by how far the queue physically extends rather than the number.
Scan the same park ticket on a second run. Scores accumulate and the leaderboard is the main reason to do it twice.
Hold the trigger down rather than aiming. The scoring rewards volume of fire, not accuracy, and children work this out faster than adults do.
This is the best attraction in the park for a guest who cannot transfer out of a wheelchair, and staff are used to boarding chairs onto the belt. Just say so at the entrance.
It is very loud and very bright end to end. For a noise-sensitive child, bring ear defenders rather than assuming a no-height-requirement attraction is a gentle one.

Gru and the Minions Character Meet

Scheduled meets with Gru and the Minions in the middle of Minion Land, and the least intimidating character encounter in the park.

Gru and the Minions appear on a schedule in the plaza of Minion Land, and this is the character meet that works for the youngest guests. The Minion costumes sit at roughly a child's eye level rather than looming, and the performers play them physically rather than verbally.

Tips for Gru and the Minions Character Meet

Go in the last two hours of the day. The queue in the morning is inflated by everyone walking past on the way in.
The Minions are far less intimidating for a toddler than the Transformers characters in Production Central. Start here if your child is unsure.
Check the app for times. Appearances are scheduled with real gaps and standing hopefully in the plaza wastes an afternoon.
Shade in this plaza is minimal. Queue with a drink in hand in the middle of the day.
