When to go

May at the Disney parks

May is the last comfortable month at Universal Orlando before the summer takes over, and it holds moderate crowds and moderate prices for three weeks before the Memorial Day weekend closes the window.

B+

The best month of the first half of the year that is not February. Long hours, warm weather, crowds that have not yet turned over to summer, and prices that step up only at the very end.

Expected — not yet announced · Checked July 2026

Crowd and cost shapes describe multi-year patterns at both resorts rather than a forecast for any single May. Weather figures are climate normals for Orlando and for the San Fernando Valley and do not decay. The three-week gap between the Southern California and national school year endings is a stable structural feature rather than a fixed set of dates, and individual district calendars vary.

The verdict

Good month for

  • Longer park days, since operating hours reach close to their summer length
  • Water rides and outdoor queues in Orlando, which are warm without being punishing
  • Anyone who wants an Epic Universe day without March or summer weekend demand
  • Universal Hollywood before Southern California schools break in June
  • Trips that need warm weather but cannot afford July

Bad month for

  • The Memorial Day weekend, which is the first genuine peak of the summer season
  • Visitors sensitive to humidity, which becomes a factor in Orlando by mid-month
  • Anyone looking for seasonal programming, which is thin at both resorts
  • The last week generally, as summer pricing arrives before summer does
  • Bargain hunters, because May is not cheap even though it is not peak

Crowds

Moderate crowds

May is the calm between spring break and summer, and it lasts about three weeks. US schools are in session for most of the month, spring break travel has finished, and the summer wave has not started, so Universal Orlando runs moderate on weekdays and busy on weekends without ever reaching the flat plateau June brings. The month's crowd is unusually adult: conventions, international travel and childless couples make up more of it than in any other warm month, which shows up as later arrivals and longer evenings rather than heavy rope-drop demand. Hollywood's May is the last calm month it gets, and the timing differs from Orlando's for a reason worth knowing. Southern California districts finish their year in the first half of June, earlier than most of the country, so Universal Studios Hollywood starts filling up two to three weeks before the national summer season begins. A late-May weekday in California is still moderate; a mid-June one is not. The Memorial Day weekend ends the quiet at both resorts and is the reliable marker that summer pricing and summer crowd behaviour have arrived, whatever the school calendars say.

Busiest windows

  • The Memorial Day long weekend at both resorts, the first summer-level crowd of the year
  • Weekends at Universal Hollywood from the middle of the month onward
  • Epic Universe on any Saturday, which holds demand better than the older Orlando parks release it

Quietest windows

  • The first two weeks, particularly Tuesday through Thursday in Orlando
  • The week after the Memorial Day weekend, before the national school year ends
  • Evenings at Universal Studios Florida, which empties faster than Islands of Adventure does

ResortAvg highAvg lowRain daysWhat it feels like
Universal Orlando (Orlando)89°F67°F8Climate normals for Orlando, not a forecast. Hot but not yet oppressive: high 80s afternoons with humidity that is climbing through the month, and eight rain days rather than the seventeen July brings. The afternoon thunderstorm pattern usually establishes itself in the last week or two, which is the point at which an Orlando day starts needing a midday plan.
Universal Hollywood (Los Angeles)80°F57°F2Climate normals for the San Fernando Valley around Universal City, not a forecast. Effectively dry, with afternoons around 80 and evenings in the high 50s. The coastal marine layer often keeps mornings grey and cool into midday this month, which is a local pattern visitors mistake for bad weather and which usually burns off by lunchtime.

Cost

Moderate cost

May prices in the middle of the Universal Orlando year and does not stay there. The first three weeks carry mid-tier ticket dates, hotel rates below the summer level, and Express Pass pricing that responds mostly to the day of the week rather than to the season. The Memorial Day weekend is priced as a peak weekend and the rates that go up for it largely do not come back down, because summer season starts immediately behind it. That makes the first half of May a genuinely better buy than the second half for the same product. Hollywood's May pricing is flatter, as its one-day tickets move in fewer tiers, but its Express Pass follows the local crowd and starts climbing from mid-month as Southern California schools approach their finish. The general rule for both coasts: everything you can book in May is cheaper booked for the first half of it.

What is on in May

Planning notes

The three-week window is the point of this month

The first three weeks of May are the last stretch of the year when Universal Orlando is warm, open late, and not crowded. Ride waits sit closer to February's than to July's, operating hours are within an hour or so of their summer maximum, and the water attractions at Islands of Adventure are comfortable rather than a gamble.

That combination is what makes May worth paying moderate prices for. The equivalent conditions in September come with hurricane season attached, and the equivalent conditions in February come with short days and cold water rides.

The instruction that follows: if you are booking May, book the front of it. Every week you move later in the month costs you crowd, money, or both, and the Memorial Day weekend is a hard boundary rather than a gradual one.

The two coasts start their summer three weeks apart

Southern California districts finish the school year in the first half of June and many are done before the month starts, which is earlier than most of the country. Universal Studios Hollywood therefore begins its summer crowd pattern in late May, while Universal Orlando's does not really start until mid-June when the national calendar catches up.

For a visitor with a choice, that means the last week of May belongs to Orlando and the first two weeks of June belong to nobody in California. It also means the reverse holds in August, when California schools go back weeks before Florida's do.

Practically: if you are doing both coasts in one trip, do Hollywood first in May and Orlando second. Doing it the other way round puts you in California exactly as the local schools break up.

Nothing seasonal is running, and that is the trade

May is the emptiest month on the Universal events calendar at both resorts. Mardi Gras has finished in Orlando, Halloween Horror Nights is months away, and neither resort runs a substantial spring overlay. What you are buying is the parks themselves.

For a first Universal trip that is close to ideal, because the parks are the product and a first-timer has no shortage of things to do without an overlay. For a repeat visitor who has ridden everything, May offers less reason to come than September or December do.

The one thing that does change in May is the Studio Tour at Universal Studios Hollywood, which carries different content at different points in the year. Check what is running before assuming a repeat visit will be identical to your last one.

Start building the afternoon break into your Orlando plan now

The Orlando afternoon thunderstorm becomes a near-daily feature in the last week or two of May and stays that way until September. That is worth adjusting for before it starts rather than after, because the outdoor coasters close for lightning and the queues for indoor attractions triple within minutes of the first strike.

The shape that works from now until autumn is the same: gate before opening, headliners until early afternoon, out of the park for the storm, back in for the evening. May is the month to practise it while the stakes are low.

Epic Universe is the park where this matters most, because more of its queue space and walkways are open to the sky than at Universal Studios Florida. A storm there empties the land you are standing in and fills the one building nearby.
