What it is
The Hogwarts Express connects King's Cross Station on the London waterfront here with Hogsmeade Station at Islands of Adventure. It is presented as transport and it is not: it is an attraction with a script, effects and a different show in each direction, and it happens to move you between two parks while it runs.
You reach the platform through a station concourse and then through the barrier at platform 9¾, where a projection and mirror effect makes the guests in front of you appear to walk through a solid brick wall. From the platform you board a compartment seating a small group, and the window is a screen showing the journey.
The two directions are genuinely different. Travelling to Hogsmeade you get one set of scenes and one set of characters passing the corridor door; travelling back you get another. Riding only one way is the most common way people waste a park-to-park ticket they have already paid for.
What riding it is actually like
The concourse at King's Cross is dressed as a working London terminus, and the queue is long, level and well themed. There is no locker requirement and no restraint of any kind.
Compartments hold roughly eight people on facing bench seats. Once the train moves, the window becomes the journey — countryside, the viaduct, weather — while a frosted corridor door behind you carries silhouettes and a soundtrack of people walking past. The two channels running at once is the trick that makes it work.
The middle of the journey brings a sequence involving Dementors, with the compartment darkening and the window frosting over, which is the only part likely to bother a child. The whole trip runs about four minutes and ends at the other park, so plan the rest of your day around where you are going to be standing.

Tips that actually help
- You need a park-to-park ticket, and it is checked at the platform in both directions. There is no way to buy your way onto it at the station.
- Ride it in both directions on the same day. The two shows are different and doing one is doing half of it.
- Ride mid-morning rather than at opening or close. The platform queue is heaviest in the first and last hours when everyone is transferring between parks.
- Stand at the back of your group at the platform 9¾ barrier to watch the effect work on the people in front of you. It reads better from behind than from inside it.
