Fast & Furious – Supercharged

What it is

Fast & Furious – Supercharged opened in 2018 in the San Francisco waterfront buildings and is, by broad consensus, the weakest attraction at Universal Orlando. It puts you on a large party-bus vehicle which drives slowly into a tunnel of wraparound projection screens, and the screens do the work while the bus does very little.

The queue is a long walk through a garage and a family gathering, with pre-show video sequences that take a considerable amount of time to set up a plot nobody needs. The ride itself runs about five minutes and consists mainly of watching a car chase happen to other people.

There is one genuine merit and it is worth stating without sarcasm: it has level boarding and no real motion, is fully air conditioned, and seats a lot of people. Riders must be at least 40 inches tall, with a supervising companion required through 48 inches. On a hot afternoon with a mixed-ability group that clears the height rule, it still has value.

What riding it was like

The queue is long and heavily themed as a garage and a warehouse, with two pre-shows that between them add a good ten minutes before you reach the vehicle. On a quiet day this is more time than the ride deserves; on a busy one it is where the wait actually happens.

Boarding is level and the vehicle is a long open-sided bus with bench seating, so a group stays together and wheelchairs board without transferring. Once inside the tunnel, screens surround you and a chase plays out around the bus with light physical effects and a mist.

The bus tilts and shudders a little but it does not do anything dramatic. Five minutes later it stops and you get off. Riders coming from Transformers in the same park generally find the contrast unflattering.

Is Fast & Furious – Supercharged scary?

Gunfire sound effects, explosions, a helicopter sequence and a lot of shouting, all at high volume, but no drops and no real speed. The vehicle itself barely moves. Small children are startled by the noise rather than anything they see, and there is nothing in it likely to produce a lasting fright.

Scores are editorial, on a 1–5 scale, judged against what frightens a typical four- to seven-year-old rather than an adult.

Accessibility

Guests board a large party-bus style vehicle from a level platform, and designated wheelchair positions are available without transferring. Riders stand or sit on bench seating; there are no individual restraints, which makes it one of the easier attractions here for guests with limited mobility.
