Marvel Super Hero Island

Primary-colored comic architecture wrapped around the park's two most physically aggressive rides and its best dark ride.

Dark ride · 4½ min · Express

A motion-base dark ride from 1999 that still outclasses most of what has been built since, and the best thing at Universal Orlando that is not a coaster.

The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man opened with the park in 1999 and invented a category. It puts a twelve-passenger vehicle on a track through a series of rooms, and in each room it hands you off between physical sets, projected 3D film and pure motion simulation without ever letting you work out which is which. Nothing before it had combined those three things at that level of precision, and a remarkable amount of what has been built at Universal since is a descendant of it.

Tips for The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man
  • Ride standby the first time for the Daily Bugle queue, then use single rider for every ride after that. The single rider line here is one of the shortest-feeling in the park because the vehicle seats twelve.
  • Sit in the middle row if you can choose. The 3D convergence is set for that position and the outside seats show more of the screen edges.
  • If your glasses fog, ask a team member for a cleaning cloth at load. The room is cold and humid and it happens constantly.
  • This is the best indoor attraction in the park and one of very few genuinely air-conditioned ones. Save it for a hot hour rather than burning a cool morning slot on it.
  • Repeat-visitor note: watch the physical sets rather than the screens on a later ride. Roughly half the ride is real scenery and most riders never register it.

Roller coaster · 2¼ min · Express

A 54-inch launch coaster that fires uphill instead of dropping, then turns you upside down seven times in under two and a half minutes.

The Incredible Hulk Coaster does one thing no other major coaster in Florida does: it launches you up the lift hill. Instead of a chain dragging the train to the top, a tire-drive launch system accelerates it from a standstill to roughly 40 mph inside a tunnel in about two seconds, spits it out at around 110 feet, and rolls it immediately into an inverted zero-gravity roll before you have processed what happened. Twenty-seven years on, that opening is still the best two seconds on any coaster in Orlando.

Tips for The Incredible Hulk Coaster
  • Use the single rider line. It regularly turns a 45-minute posted wait into ten, and the trains have a lot of single seats to fill.
  • Everything goes in a locker, including phones in zipped pockets, and there is a metal detector on the platform. Turn up with empty pockets and you will save five minutes and an argument.
  • Ride it at night. The launch tunnel, the lagoon inversions and the lighting package all work better in the dark, and this is the best night ride in the park.
  • Use the test seat outside the entrance if there is any doubt about fit. The over-the-shoulder restraint has a hard stop and larger guests are turned away at the platform.
  • Repeat-visitor note: the back row is a noticeably rougher and faster ride than the front. Do the front first for the launch view, then the back for the forces.

Roller coaster · ¾ min · Express

Two 200-foot towers that fire you upward on compressed air and drop you back down, over in about forty seconds.

Doctor Doom's Fearfall is the pair of twin towers that dominate the Marvel skyline alongside the Hulk. Each holds a ring of outward-facing seats that is launched roughly 150 feet up a 200-foot tower by compressed air, held at the top for a fraction of a second, and then dropped, bouncing a couple of times on the way down. The whole cycle takes about forty seconds from launch to unload.

Tips for Doctor Doom's Fearfall
  • Use single rider. This is the ride where standby is worst value in the park - forty seconds of ride does not justify a forty-minute queue when a five-minute alternative exists.
  • Ride before you eat, not after. It is the most stomach-hostile forty seconds at Islands of Adventure.
  • Keep your eyes open at the top. The view over the lagoon and CityWalk is genuinely good and almost nobody sees it.
  • The two towers run independently and often have different loading speeds. Look at which side the queue is feeding before you commit.
  • Skip it entirely if your day is short. It is the most expendable of the park's big rides and the one you will least regret missing.

Storm Force Accelatron

Any height

Spinner · 1½ min · Express

A teacup ride with an X-Men paint job - the only attraction on Marvel Super Hero Island a small child can walk onto.

Storm Force Accelatron is a standard three-platform spinning teacup ride themed to Storm generating a weather event, with a loud soundtrack and lighting effects overhead. Each capsule has a wheel in the middle that lets riders add their own rotation on top of the platform's, which is the entire ride.

Tips for Storm Force Accelatron
  • Do not touch the wheel if you are prone to motion sickness. The platform rotation on its own is mild; the wheel is what causes problems.
  • This is the swap-out ride for families splitting on Hulk and Doctor Doom's. It sits between both queues and the cycle is short.
  • Ride it before eating rather than after. It is a teacup ride and it behaves like one.
  • It takes Express Pass, which is almost never worth using here - the wait is usually under fifteen minutes.

Marvel Character Meet-Up

Any height

Character meet · 10 min

Marvel heroes and villains appearing on the plaza in comic-book costume rather than film costume, at posted times through the day.

Marvel characters appear on the plaza outside the Comic Book Shop at posted times, and the costuming is drawn from the comics rather than the films - Universal's licensing arrangement does not permit the movie versions of these characters here, and the difference is immediately visible. Spider-Man, Captain America, Wolverine, Storm, Rogue and Cyclops are the regulars.

Tips for Marvel Character Meet-Up
  • Check the app for the day's posted times rather than hoping to stumble on it. The appearances are scheduled and short.
  • Stand back and watch one interaction before putting a nervous child in front of a villain. The performers commit.
  • This is the only reliable character interaction at Islands of Adventure. If character photos matter to your group, budget for it rather than assuming they will find someone.
  • The plaza has almost no shade. In summer, wait in Cafe 4 and come out when the appearance starts.

Toon Lagoon

Newspaper comic strips rendered in three dimensions, and two water rides that will genuinely soak you through.

Water ride · 5 min · Express

A log flume with a 75-foot final drop that finishes below the waterline, and one of the two rides here that will genuinely soak you.

Dudley Do-Right's Ripsaw Falls is a log flume built around the Canadian Mountie sketches from Rocky and Bullwinkle, which means the story involves a moose, a villain with a moustache and a sawmill, and essentially nobody under fifty recognizes any of it. It does not matter. The ride works on its own terms as one of the better-engineered flumes anywhere.

Tips for Dudley Do-Right's Ripsaw Falls
  • Put everything in the lockers at the entrance. Ponchos help here in a way they do not on the Bilge-Rat Barges, but they will not keep your shoes dry.
  • Ride this in the early afternoon, back to back with Popeye & Bluto's Bilge-Rat Barges, and get the soaking over with in one block.
  • Do not bother angling for a drier seat. There is not one. The difference between front and back is a matter of degree.
  • There are guest-operated water jets along the exit walkway aimed at the logs. They cost small change and using them on the next boat is half the fun of the island.
  • Repeat-visitor note: the indoor middle section has some of the best cartoon set dressing in the park and everyone ignores it while bracing for the drop. Look left.

Water ride · 5 min · Express

A spinning river rapids ride that is the wettest attraction in Orlando, with water arriving from waterfalls, cannons and other guests.

Popeye & Bluto's Bilge-Rat Barges is a river rapids ride themed to Popeye rescuing Olive Oyl from Bluto, and it holds the distinction of being the wettest ride in Orlando by a comfortable margin. Twelve riders sit in a circular raft with a central console, the raft spins freely as it goes, and water is delivered from every conceivable angle across a five-minute circuit.

Tips for Popeye & Bluto's Bilge-Rat Barges
  • Lockers, without exception. A poncho is close to useless here because water comes up from the floor of the raft as well as down from above.
  • Take your shoes off and put them in the locker with your bag if you can bear walking to the platform barefoot. Wet shoes are the thing that ruins the rest of the day, not wet clothes.
  • Ride it immediately after Ripsaw Falls in the early afternoon. Getting wet twice in twenty minutes is far better than getting wet twice five hours apart.
  • Watch a few rafts go past from the bridge before you commit if you have a nervous child. The water cannons make the ride look worse than it is, which is useful information either way.
  • Repeat-visitor note: this is the best ride in the park in August at 3 PM and one of the worst in January at 10 AM. Its quality is a function of the thermometer.

Me Ship, The Olive

Any height

Play area · 25 min

A three-deck walk-through boat with slides, gadgets and water cannons aimed at the Bilge-Rat rafts passing underneath.

Me Ship, The Olive is Popeye's boat rendered as a climbable three-deck play structure, and it is the most consistently overlooked free thing at Islands of Adventure. It has slides, ladders, bells, whistles, organ pipes that play, and a set of interactive gadgets on every level that reward pulling and pushing everything you see.

Tips for Me Ship, The Olive
  • Split the group. Put one adult and any non-riders on the boat with the cannons while the rest queue for the Bilge-Rat Barges, and time it so they are firing when your raft comes past.
  • The cannons are on the upper deck, reached by stairs. Ground level has plenty for smaller children but not the good part.
  • There is real shade on the lower deck, which makes this one of the few places in Toon Lagoon to stand still in July.
  • Budget twenty-five minutes if you have a child under eight. They will not leave in ten.

Comic Strip Lane

Any height

Walkthrough · 15 min

The main street of Toon Lagoon, built as a three-dimensional newspaper comics page with speech bubbles, props and hidden water jets.

Comic Strip Lane is the walkway that carries you through Toon Lagoon, and it is a designed attraction rather than a corridor. The buildings are constructed as comic panels, complete with speech bubbles you can stand inside, sound effects rendered as physical objects, and character statues at the right scale for photographs. The source material is mid-century American newspaper strips, so most guests will not recognize the characters and it still works.

Tips for Comic Strip Lane
  • Walk it slowly on the way in and take the photographs then. On the way out you will be wet and in no mood.
  • The water jets in the paving are not decorative and they are not on a schedule you can predict. Keep phones away if you are crossing at speed.
  • The speech-bubble props are the best free photo opportunities in the park and there is almost never a queue for them.
  • This is the loudest walkway in Islands of Adventure. If someone in your group is noise-sensitive, cut through quickly and regroup in Jurassic Park.

Skull Island

A single attraction on its own island - a temple gate, a dark expedition truck ride, and a huge animatronic at the end.

Dark ride · 5½ min · Express

A truck expedition through a dark temple and a 3D jungle, ending at a 16-foot Kong animatronic that is the best physical effect in the park.

Skull Island: Reign of Kong opened in 2016 on a strip of land between Toon Lagoon and Jurassic Park that Universal turned into an island for the purpose. It is a large expedition truck ride: you board a twelve-row vehicle with a driver figure, roll through a temple, and then run a gauntlet of creature encounters delivered on very large curved screens with the truck pitching and turning in sync.

Tips for Skull Island: Reign of Kong
  • Ask about the alternate queue at the entrance if anyone is nervous. The walkthrough is the frightening part and it can be skipped without missing the ride.
  • Use single rider. The trucks hold a lot of people and the gaps are constant, so this line moves faster than almost any other here.
  • Take a back row if you are prone to simulator sickness and a front row if you want the effects. The difference is unusually large on this ride.
  • Ride at night. The temple exterior lighting and the queue both improve substantially after dark, and the wait is shorter.
  • Repeat-visitor note: the driver character is randomized. There are several, and collecting them is the only reason to ride this more than twice in a trip.

Jurassic Park

The 1993 film's visitor center rendered in full scale, plus the best roller coaster in Florida bolted onto the back of it.

Roller coaster · 2½ min · Express

The best roller coaster in Florida: two launches, a 155-foot top hat, four inversions and a stretch of track that runs inches above the lagoon.

Jurassic World VelociCoaster opened in June 2021 along the lagoon edge of Jurassic Park and immediately became the best ride at Universal Orlando. It is a launch coaster with two separate launches, a top speed around 70 mph, a 155-foot top hat with an over-banked drop, four inversions and about 4,700 feet of track, and it is paced better than any coaster in the state.

Tips for Jurassic World VelociCoaster
  • Use the single rider line for everything after your first ride. It is the most valuable single rider queue at Universal Orlando and it is well signposted at the entrance.
  • Ride once in the front row for the lagoon view and once in the back row for the airtime. They are genuinely different rides.
  • Everything goes in a locker, phones included, and there is a metal detector at the platform. Come with empty pockets.
  • Use the test seat if there is any question about fit. The lap bar has to reach a fixed click point and there is no negotiating at the platform.
  • Repeat-visitor note: ride it at dusk. The over-water section with the lights coming up on the lagoon is the best two seconds in the park.

Full guide to Jurassic World VelociCoaster →

Water ride · 6 min · Express

A slow boat tour of the dinosaur park that goes wrong, ending with an 85-foot drop in the dark that drenches the front rows.

Jurassic Park River Adventure has been here since opening day in 1999 and it is a faithful reconstruction of the boat tour from the 1993 film, right down to the gates, the score and the tour narration. The first four minutes are a genuine slow scenic ride past ultrasaurus, stegosaurus and a hadrosaur herd rendered as large, well-built animatronics in daylight. It is the only calm ride in this half of the park.

Tips for Jurassic Park River Adventure
  • Sit in the back rows to stay relatively dry and the front two to get properly drenched. This is the only water ride here where the choice actually works.
  • There are lockers at the entrance and they are worth using even from the back row - the drop throws enough water that a phone in a pocket is a real risk.
  • Ride it before VelociCoaster in the morning if the standby is short. It builds later in the day than the coaster does and gets skipped for the wrong reasons.
  • Warn small children about the last two minutes rather than the first four. The gentle opening is what lulls families into riding it.
  • Repeat-visitor note: look up on the left as you enter the first indoor section. There is a set piece there that almost nobody sees because they are watching the water.

Roller coaster · 1½ min

A suspended glider over Jurassic Park restricted to riders between 36 and 56 inches, with the worst capacity and the worst wait-to-ride ratio in the park.

Pteranodon Flyers is a suspended gliding ride that carries two people at a time in a dangling seat along a track above the Jurassic Park island, at low speed, for roughly ninety seconds. It has been here since 1999 and it is one of the most misunderstood attractions in Orlando.

Tips for Pteranodon Flyers
  • Only queue for this if the posted wait is under twenty minutes. At any higher number the arithmetic does not work and Camp Jurassic underneath it is free and better.
  • Check the height band before you queue. Riders must be 36 to 56 inches, and an adult over 56 inches can only ride as the companion of a qualifying child.
  • There is no Express Pass on this ride and no single rider line. There is no way to shorten the wait.
  • Do it first thing in the morning if it matters to your child. It is one of the few attractions here where the early-morning wait is dramatically better than the rest of the day.
  • Repeat-visitor note: the view down into Camp Jurassic is the best part, and you can get most of it for free by climbing the play structure's upper level.

Full guide to Pteranodon Flyers →

Camp Jurassic

Any height

Play area · 45 min

A three-level playground of caves, nets, rope bridges and slides that is the best free thing in the park and will absorb an hour of a child's day.

Camp Jurassic is a multi-level adventure playground built into the terrain between the River Adventure and Pteranodon Flyers, and it is considerably more ambitious than its no-queue, no-fee status suggests. It has rope bridges, cargo nets, lava pits that hiss and steam, a set of amber mines with dark tunnels, slides at multiple levels, dinosaur bone dig areas and water cannons that children can aim at each other.

Tips for Camp Jurassic
  • Agree a ground-level meeting point before anyone goes in. There are multiple exits at different heights and children come out somewhere other than where they went in.
  • Send children here while the adults ride VelociCoaster. It is directly next door and it will hold their attention longer than the queue takes.
  • The amber mine tunnels are genuinely dark. Walk a nervous child through once rather than letting them find them alone.
  • The water cannons will make them wet. Do this before Toon Lagoon, not after you have already dried out.
  • Repeat-visitor note: the upper-level view across to the VelociCoaster track is the best free photo spot in Jurassic Park.

Jurassic Park Discovery Center

Any height

Walkthrough · 20 min

The film's visitor center rebuilt as a free, air-conditioned exhibit hall - the best sensory break and the emptiest building in the park.

The Discovery Center is the domed building from the 1993 film, reconstructed at full scale on the lagoon edge, and inside it is an exhibit hall with interactive dinosaur displays, a skeleton, a DNA sequencing game and a raptor hatching demonstration that runs at intervals through the day. Entry is free and there is no queue.

Tips for Jurassic Park Discovery Center
  • Use this as your heat break. It is the largest air-conditioned space in the park that does not require buying food.
  • Check the time of the next raptor hatching demonstration when you walk in. It is short, it is genuinely well done, and it is the only scheduled thing in the building.
  • There is an upper level with a good view over the lagoon that most visitors never climb to.
  • This is the right place to bring a child who was upset by Reign of Kong or the River Adventure. It is calm, bright and has nothing sudden in it.

Raptor Encounter

Any height

Character meet · 5 min

A close-range meet with a full-size velociraptor puppet and a handler in character, and the best photo opportunity in the park.

Raptor Encounter puts guests a few feet from a full-size velociraptor - a highly articulated puppet with a performer inside, managed by a handler who stays in character throughout. The raptor breathes, tracks movement, snaps and reacts, and it is convincing enough that adults hesitate before stepping up to it.

Tips for Raptor Encounter
  • Check the posted times in the app. It is not a continuous offering and there are gaps of an hour or more.
  • Let a nervous child watch two or three other guests go first. The handler will happily slow the interaction down if you ask.
  • Do not put your hand out. The handler will tell you the same thing and the raptor will react as though you had.
  • This is the best photograph available at Islands of Adventure and the queue is usually under fifteen minutes.

Hogsmeade — Islands of Adventure

A snow-roofed village under Hogwarts Castle holding two headline rides, the train to Diagon Alley, and Butterbeer.

Roller coaster · 3 min

A seven-launch story coaster with no inversions, a drop track and a vertical spike - and the only major ride here excluded from Express Pass.

Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure opened in June 2019 in the space formerly occupied by Dragon Challenge, and it is the most inventive roller coaster Universal has built. It is a multi-launch layout with seven separate launches - some forward, one backwards - a vertical spike that stalls the train, and a free-fall drop track section that detaches the train from the track's momentum entirely. It has no inversions and its top speed is around 50 mph.

Tips for Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure
  • Hagrid's is not on Express Pass and never has been, and it has no single rider line. Ride it in the first thirty minutes of the day, during Early Park Admission if your hotel provides it, or in the final hour before close.
  • Do not walk anywhere else first. If Hagrid's is your priority, it is the first thing you do after the turnstiles, before Forbidden Journey and before VelociCoaster.
  • Ask for the sidecar if straddling a seat and leaning forward for three minutes is uncomfortable. It is a request the platform team handle routinely.
  • This ride goes down in rain more than anything else in the park. If it closes for weather, stay in Hogsmeade and watch the app rather than leaving the island.
  • Repeat-visitor note: ride the bike once and the sidecar once. The sightlines into the forest scenery are meaningfully different and the animatronics read better from the sidecar.

Full guide to Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure →

Dark ride · 4¼ min · Express

A robotic-arm dark ride inside Hogwarts Castle that swings you between physical sets and dome screens - and the ride most likely to make you queasy.

Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey opened with Hogsmeade in 2010 and was, at the time, the most technically ambitious dark ride ever built. The vehicle is a bench of four seats mounted on a robotic arm carried along a track, which lets it pitch, roll, tilt and rotate freely while moving. The result is a ride that can put you flat on your back looking up at a dome screen one second and swing you sideways into a physical set the next.

Tips for Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey
  • Use the test bench outside the entrance before you queue. The restraint has a fixed closing point and guests are turned away at the platform every day - after the full wait.
  • Do the standby queue at least once for the castle. Single rider skips most of the best queue in the park, so save it for your second ride onward.
  • Sit in an outer seat if you are prone to motion sickness, and keep your eyes on the physical sets rather than the dome screens. It genuinely helps.
  • Ask about the castle walkthrough if someone in your group is not riding. Universal runs a non-rider tour of the same route and it is one of the best things at Islands of Adventure.
  • Repeat-visitor note: the portrait gallery arguments and the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom both have multi-minute loops. Standing still for one full cycle is worth doing once.

Roller coaster · 1 min · Express

Hogsmeade's family coaster at 36 inches - a one-minute ride that is the only thing in the Wizarding World a small child can do.

Flight of the Hippogriff is a short, gentle steel coaster that runs a lap around Hagrid's hut, and structurally it is the most important ride in Hogsmeade. Both of the land's other attractions require 48 inches. This one requires 36. For a family with a small child, it is the entire Wizarding World ride offering.

Tips for Flight of the Hippogriff
  • Bow to Buckbeak in the queue. The animatronic bows back and about a third of guests walk past without noticing.
  • This is the only Hogsmeade ride available under 48 inches. If your youngest is between 36 and 48 inches, this is the one to prioritize in this land.
  • Waits here are wildly disproportionate to the ride - forty minutes for sixty seconds is normal. Use Express Pass here if you have it, which is a rare case where it makes sense on a family coaster.
  • Ride it early. It builds through the morning as families arrive and it does not clear much until the last hour.
  • Repeat-visitor note: the view from the top of the lift toward Hogwarts Castle is the best on-ride view in Hogsmeade, and it lasts about three seconds.

Full guide to Flight of the Hippogriff →

Transportation · 4 min · Express

The train between Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley - a real attraction, with different content each way, that requires a park-to-park ticket.

The Hogwarts Express opened in 2014 alongside Diagon Alley at Universal Studios Florida, and it does two jobs at once. It is transportation between two parks, and it is an attraction with its own show content. You board at Hogsmeade Station, sit in a compartment of a full-size carriage, and the window beside you plays a four-minute journey while the corridor glass on the other side shows silhouettes of characters walking past.

Tips for Hogwarts Express - Hogsmeade Station
  • You need a park-to-park ticket. There is no upgrade sold at the station and there is no exception, so sort the ticket out before the trip rather than at the platform.
  • Ride it in both directions on different occasions. The films are different productions and doing both is the only way to see all the content.
  • Take it in the late afternoon toward Diagon Alley. Arriving there in the early evening puts you in the best-looking land Universal Orlando has built at its best hour.
  • Queues here are longest around 11 AM and 4 PM as guests migrate between parks. Mid-morning and after 6 PM are noticeably quicker.
  • Repeat-visitor note: watch the corridor glass on the far side of the compartment rather than the window. There is a whole second layer of staging happening there.

Ollivanders

Any height

Show · 8 min

A live wand ceremony in a small shop where one guest per show is chosen by a wand, followed by an exit straight into the wand counter.

Ollivanders is a small performance space at the Hogsmeade end of the village, and it is one of the better pieces of live theater at Universal Orlando. About twenty-five guests are let into a dim, cluttered shop lined with wand boxes. A wandkeeper performer selects one person from the group - almost always a child, though not always - and puts them through a wand-choosing ceremony with practical effects: drawers slam open, a wind gets up, a flower arrangement dies, a shelf collapses.

Tips for Ollivanders
  • Go first thing in the morning or in the last hour. The mid-day queue for this is outdoors, slow and hot, for an eight-minute show.
  • Only one guest per show is chosen and children at the front who are visibly keen are chosen most often. Nothing is guaranteed and it is worth managing expectations before you go in.
  • The Diagon Alley Ollivanders across at Universal Studios Florida is larger, has more show rooms and usually has a much shorter queue for the same experience.
  • Buy the interactive wand rather than the character wand if you are buying one at all. Only the interactive version triggers the spell-casting spots around both Wizarding World lands.
  • Repeat-visitor note: you can walk straight into the wand shop without going through the show if you only want to buy a wand. The two entrances are separate.

Full guide to Ollivanders →

Interactive Wand Spell-Casting

Any height

Interactive game · 40 min

Marked spots around Hogsmeade where an interactive wand triggers a physical effect - the best thing in the Wizarding World for a child too short to ride.

Interactive wands, sold at Ollivanders and elsewhere in the village, contain a reflective tip that infrared sensors track. About a dozen spots around Hogsmeade are marked with brass medallions in the paving showing a spell name and a wand motion, and performing the motion correctly at that spot triggers a physical effect: a fountain spouts, a lamp lights, a music box plays, a quill writes, a wooden puppet moves.

Tips for Interactive Wand Spell-Casting
  • Buy the interactive wand, not the character wand. Only the interactive version has the tracked tip, and the difference is not obvious on the shelf.
  • The motion matters more than the incantation. Watch the diagram on the medallion and make the gesture large and slow rather than fast and small.
  • There are more spell locations in Diagon Alley than in Hogsmeade. If you hold a park-to-park ticket, the same wand works over there and the crowding around each spot is lower.
  • Queues form at the most popular medallions in the afternoon. The ones down the side alleys are almost always free.
  • Team members in the village will quietly help a struggling child get an effect to fire. Ask rather than letting a five-year-old fail six times in a row.

Frog Choir and Triwizard Spirit Rally

Any height

Stage show · 12 min

Two short street shows on the Hogsmeade stage - an a cappella choir with frog puppets, and a Triwizard demonstration - running at posted times.

Hogsmeade has a small outdoor stage near the village entrance that hosts two short performances in rotation. The Frog Choir is four Hogwarts students singing a cappella arrangements of wizarding songs, accompanied by two very large croaking frog puppets on cushions. The Triwizard Spirit Rally is a demonstration from the visiting Durmstrang and Beauxbatons students, with staff work, ribbon and tumbling.

Tips for Frog Choir and Triwizard Spirit Rally
  • Check the app for the day's schedule. Both shows run at posted times and there are long gaps between them.
  • Stand at the side rather than the front. The stage is low and the sightlines from the middle are blocked by everyone else standing.
  • The Frog Choir is the better of the two and the frog puppets are the reason. Small children who cannot ride anything else in this land respond to it.
  • Neither show is worth restructuring a day around. Catch one if the timing falls out naturally on your way through the village.

Everything in Hogsmeade — Islands of Adventure

1 attraction

The Lost Continent

What is left of the park's mythology island after Hogsmeade took half of it - one restaurant, one talking fountain, two dark theaters.

The Mystic Fountain

Any height

Interactive game · 10 min

A talking stone fountain operated by a live performer who argues with passing children and squirts them - free, and better than it sounds.

The Mystic Fountain is a carved stone face in a small plaza in The Lost Continent, voiced live by a performer watching from off-stage. It talks to passing guests, asks questions, insults children affectionately, tells bad jokes, and fires a jet of water at anyone who gets too confident. It has been doing this since 1999.

Tips for The Mystic Fountain
  • Stop for five minutes with children in tow. It is the only thing at Islands of Adventure that responds to what they say.
  • It will squirt you. That is the deal, and standing at the front while heckling is asking for it.
  • The performer works in shifts and the fountain goes quiet between them. If it is silent, come back in twenty minutes rather than assuming it is broken.
  • This plaza is one of the shadiest spots in the park, which makes it a good place to stand still in the middle of the afternoon anyway.

Seuss Landing

The only island built for small children, and the reason a family with a preschooler can still have a day here.

Dark ride · 3½ min · Express

A spinning-couch dark ride through the whole book at 36 inches - a genuinely good attraction rather than a children's consolation prize.

The Cat in the Hat takes a six-passenger couch on a track through a room-by-room retelling of the book, with the couch rotating freely as it goes so the scenes arrive from unexpected directions. It is the best attraction in Seuss Landing and one of the better traditional dark rides in Orlando, which is not how most adults treat it on the way past.

Tips for The Cat in the Hat
  • Do not skip this because it is in Seuss Landing. It is a better dark ride than most of what is at Magic Kingdom in the same category.
  • Face forward deliberately and avoid tracking the scenery if you are prone to motion sickness. The spinning cannot be switched off.
  • Ride it in the late afternoon. Seuss Landing empties out as families with young children leave and the wait drops to nearly nothing.
  • The 36-inch requirement is the same as Skull Island: Reign of Kong, and this ride is vastly gentler. If a child has cleared 36 inches, this is where to start.
  • Repeat-visitor note: the detail density is high enough that a second ride shows you a completely different set of gags, because the couch spins differently each time.

Train · 3 min · Express

An elevated trolley that circles Seuss Landing at rooftop height with a 34-inch minimum - the lowest height requirement in the park.

The High in the Sky Seuss Trolley Train Ride! opened in 2006 and runs small trolley cars on an elevated track that loops around and through the buildings of Seuss Landing at rooftop level, at roughly walking speed, for about three minutes. Its 34-inch requirement is the lowest at Islands of Adventure, which makes it the first ride a lot of children here can do.

Tips for The High in the Sky Seuss Trolley Train Ride!
  • This is the lowest height requirement in the park at 34 inches. For a family with a very small child, it is the first ride to head for.
  • There are two tracks with different routes. Look at which side the queue is feeding and ride both if the wait is short.
  • The cars are cramped for adults. If two adults and two children are riding together, split as one adult per car rather than squeezing four in.
  • Ride in the late afternoon for the light. The view across the lagoon from the outer loop is the best thing about it and it is best an hour before sunset.
  • Repeat-visitor note: the pass through the Circus McGurkus building is the piece of design worth watching for, and it goes by in about four seconds.

Caro-Seuss-el

Any height

Spinner · 2 min · Express

A carousel of Dr. Seuss creatures whose eyes blink and heads turn, with no minimum height and no straight lines anywhere on it.

Caro-Seuss-el is a carousel populated entirely by invented Seuss animals - cowfish, elephant-birds, twin camels - rather than horses, and every mount is animated. Eyes blink, heads turn, tails move, and the ones with reins make the animal respond when a child pulls them. It is the most detailed carousel in Orlando by some distance and it took a serious amount of sculpting work.

Tips for Caro-Seuss-el
  • There is no minimum height here. For a family with a toddler, this and One Fish, Two Fish are the only two rides in the park with no restriction at all.
  • Ask at load if someone in your party cannot straddle a mount. There is a chariot and several bench-style seats at the outer edge.
  • Every mount is animated. Let a child pick their own rather than taking the first free one - they are all different and some react more than others.
  • The queue is short all day. This is a good filler while someone else in the group is on The Cat in the Hat.

One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish

Any height

Spinner · 2 min · Express

A spinner where the song tells you when to go up or down, and the water spouts punish you for getting it wrong.

One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish is a hub-and-spoke spinner in the Dumbo mold, with one significant addition: a rhyme plays throughout that instructs riders when to raise and lower their fish, and squirting spouts positioned around the ride fire at anyone who is at the wrong height at the wrong moment. Following the song keeps you dry. Ignoring it does not.

Tips for One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish
  • Listen to the rhyme. It tells you when to go up and down, and the spouts fire at whoever is on the wrong level - this is not random.
  • You will get lightly wet regardless. It is a splash rather than a soaking, but do not queue for this holding an unprotected phone.
  • No minimum height. This and Caro-Seuss-el are the only two rides in the park with no restriction at all.
  • The lever needs real hand strength. An adult should ride with a child under about seven rather than expecting them to operate it.
