Comparison

Epic Universe vs Islands of Adventure

Epic Universe is the better-built park and the better first day. Islands of Adventure has ten more attractions, the better coasters, and sits on the campus you can walk to. If you have one day, take Epic. If you have two, the second one belongs to Islands of Adventure.

The verdict

Epic Universe for a first visit and for the better single day. Islands of Adventure for coasters, for roster depth, and for the day that costs you no shuttle at either end.

Epic Universe opened in May 2025 as the first major theme park built in the United States in more than two decades, and it took the flagship role off Islands of Adventure on the strength of design rather than of ride count. It has about 21 attractions to Islands of Adventure's 30. Its worlds — Celestial Park, the Ministry of Magic, SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, the Isle of Berk and Dark Universe — are more coherently built than anything else Universal operates in Florida, and Celestial Park is the rare hub that holds real attractions rather than functioning as a corridor.

Islands of Adventure keeps the things a ride park is judged on. Jurassic World VelociCoaster is the best roller coaster in Florida and Epic Universe has nothing that displaces it. The Incredible Hulk Coaster, Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure and Doctor Doom's Fearfall give it a thrill bench four deep behind that. It has three water rides where Epic Universe has none of the same order, six single rider lines, and a lagoon loop you reach on foot from the parking hubs.

The structural difference nobody mentions in the marketing is the campus. Epic Universe is on its own land a short drive south of the original resort. Neither the CityWalk walkway nor the Hogwarts Express reaches it. Getting there means the resort shuttle bus, a car into Epic's own parking structure, or a rideshare, and that transfer has to be built into both ends of the day. You cannot decide at 3 PM to hop over, the way you can between the two original parks.

So the recommendation splits cleanly. A first-time visitor with one day should take Epic Universe, because it is the more complete and better-realised day and because it is the thing nobody has seen before. A group that came to Orlando for roller coasters should take Islands of Adventure, and will not regret it. Anyone with two days does both, and the order should be Epic first while your legs are fresh, because it is the park that asks more of them.

For twenty-six years Islands of Adventure was the best theme park Universal operated in the United States. Epic Universe opened in May 2025 and the question of whether that is still true is the most argued-about thing in Orlando planning right now.

The short answer is that they win on different criteria, and the criteria are unusually easy to separate. Epic Universe wins on build quality, on food, on how a day feels after dark, and on being new. Islands of Adventure wins on roster depth, on roller coasters, on getting there, and on what a second visit is worth.

One planning fact frames everything below: these two parks are not on the same campus and you cannot walk between them. Treat a trip that includes both as a trip with a transfer in it, not as a park hop.

Head to head

“Edge” marks which side we think wins that row. A row with no edge marked is genuinely a tie.
Universal Epic UniverseIslands of Adventure
What kind of park it isNeither shape is better in the abstract. Epic Universe punishes a badly sequenced day; Islands of Adventure punishes a change of mind.A hub-and-spoke park of five worlds around a landscaped centre, built in one piece in the 2020s with one design language. Fewer attractions, each one longer and more elaborate than the count suggests.A closed ring of seven themed islands around a lagoon, accreted from a 1999 opening plus the Wizarding World in 2010 and VelociCoaster in 2021. More attractions, more variety of ride type, less coherence between islands.
Roster depthRoster depth is the criterion that decides whether a day is full or padded, and it is the one Islands of Adventure wins clearly.About 21 attractions, of which around ten are rides, plus two theatre shows, a play area, interactive layers and character encounters. That is fewer ride vehicles than any other Orlando park.Edge
About 30 attractions and a much heavier weighting toward rides. Five headliners at 48 inches or above, three water rides, a drop tower, four small-child rides in Seuss Landing, and a walkthrough discovery centre.
Roller coastersRide Stardust Racers after dark. It runs over open, lit ground with no tunnels and no building to hide behind, and the night lap genuinely reads as a different ride.Stardust Racers at 48 inches is a dueling coaster and the best ride in the park, and Mine-Cart Madness at 42 inches is a family coaster with a genuinely clever track trick. That is the bench.Edge
Jurassic World VelociCoaster at 51 inches — two launches, a 155-foot top hat, four inversions and a run of track that skims the lagoon. The Incredible Hulk Coaster at 54, Hagrid's at 48, Flight of the Hippogriff at 36. Four coasters, three of them serious.
Ride technology and build qualityIslands of Adventure's two newest rides are as good as anything at Epic Universe. Its oldest third is where the gap opens.Edge
The most advanced set of attractions Universal has built anywhere, and the environments are finished to a standard the older parks do not reach. The Ministry of Magic is 1920s Paris on the surface with a wizarding government underneath it, at genuine city scale.
A range. Hagrid's and VelociCoaster are 2019 and 2021 and hold up completely. Spider-Man remains a landmark ride that shows its age in the screens. Toon Lagoon and parts of Marvel Super Hero Island are visibly 1999.
Height requirementsEpic Universe's 40-to-48-inch band is the widest useful one at Universal Orlando. A 42-inch child gets five attractions there and very little at Islands of Adventure.Edge
Seven attractions carry one and the tallest is 48 inches, for Stardust Racers and Monsters Unchained. Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry and Mine-Cart Madness are 42, and Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge, Hiccup's Wing Gliders and Curse of the Werewolf are 40.
Fourteen attractions carry one and the tallest is 54 inches. The Incredible Hulk Coaster at 54, Doctor Doom's Fearfall at 52, Jurassic World VelociCoaster at 51, Hagrid's and Forbidden Journey at 48. All five headliners are locked behind 48 inches.
Getting thereSpend the last fifteen minutes at Epic Universe in the hub with a drink and walk out behind the wave. You will reach your hotel at the same time with a far better final hour. Its own campus a short drive south, its own parking structure, and no walkway or train from the original resort. The shuttle bus queue at park close is the worst transport moment of a Universal Orlando trip.Edge
On the original campus, walkable from CityWalk, the parking hubs and the walkway hotels. You can leave for a hotel break and come back without a vehicle, which is a genuine advantage with children or in August.
Food and drinkBook one hub table at Epic Universe before you travel and improvise everything else. An early dinner there takes you off your feet while the queues are worst.Edge
The best eating at Universal Orlando, and most of it is in Celestial Park rather than behind a portal. Atlantic for seafood and The Blue Dragon for pan-Asian are the two sit-down rooms worth booking; Toadstool Cafe in SUPER NINTENDO WORLD is the best themed meal at the resort.
Solid and undersold. Mythos in The Lost Continent is the nicer meal, Confisco Grille in Port of Entry takes walk-ups more reliably than any other table service on the property, and Thunder Falls Terrace is the best quick service at Universal Orlando.
After darkNeither park closes with a spectacle. Epic Universe compensates with lighting design; Islands of Adventure compensates with short queues.Edge
This is the park's best hour. Celestial Park's lighting comes up, Stardust Racers reads differently at night, Dark Universe's fog and low light do what they were designed to do, and most of the crowd is behind a portal somewhere.
No parade, no fireworks and no permanent nighttime show. The practical consequence is good for riders — nothing holds crowds in place, so posted waits fall sharply in the last hour rather than staying flat.
Express Pass valueAs of July 2026 Express Pass at both parks is priced dynamically by date. The hotel-inclusion route is the one worth doing arithmetic on before booking.Express is sold here and it is the only lever, because this park runs no single rider lines at all as of July 2026. It swings a busy day from two headliners to five, a bigger swing than at the older parks because there are fewer attractions to fall back on. The attraction coverage here has moved since the park opened, so confirm it at the point of purchase.Edge
Covered by the Universal Express Unlimited that comes with a Premier hotel room, which is the cheapest way anyone gets front-of-line access at this resort. The exception matters: Hagrid's has never accepted Express and has no single rider line.
Queue and entry systemsDo SUPER NINTENDO WORLD first at Epic Universe. If the app has gated it to a later slot, take Stardust Racers instead — it sits fifty yards inside the entrance and the morning crowd runs past it.SUPER NINTENDO WORLD has been access-managed since opening and the mechanism has changed more than once — virtual queue on some days, timed entry on others, straightforward walk-in on quiet ones. The app is the only reliable source on any given day, and that world fills first regardless.Edge
Conventional standby everywhere, plus six single rider lines. Two adults using them separately will often clear six rides in the time standby takes for two, which is a tool Epic Universe does not give you at all.
Second-visit valueEpic Universe is the better park to see once. Islands of Adventure is the better park to keep going back to.Currently high, because most visitors leave having properly seen two or three of the five worlds. That is a function of the park being new and the day being long rather than of depth, and it will fade.Edge
Durable. The point of this park is riding the same four rides repeatedly, which is more of the point at Universal than it is at Disney. Six single rider lines make that arithmetic work.

What a day at each one actually feels like

The two parks fail in different ways when you plan them badly, and knowing which failure you are exposed to is most of the planning.

Epic Universe punishes sequencing. There is no perimeter path and no back route. Every move between worlds routes you through Celestial Park, so a day planned as four focused visits walks roughly two-thirds of the distance of the same day planned loosely. Pick the order at breakfast and hold it. The other trap is treating the hub as a corridor: it holds the best coaster in the park, the strangest ride in the park in the Constellation Carousel, both sit-down restaurants and every bar worth using, and visitors cross it four times without stopping and then wonder where the good food was.

Islands of Adventure punishes changing your mind. It is a ring with one entrance and no path across the middle. Seuss Landing and Marvel Super Hero Island are at opposite ends, roughly twenty minutes apart on foot. It also punishes ignoring the weather: Hulk, VelociCoaster, Hagrid's, Doctor Doom's and Pteranodon Flyers are all outdoor and all stop for lightning in the area, and central Florida gets a storm on most summer afternoons. Build the middle of the afternoon around Toon Lagoon, Seuss Landing, the Jurassic Park Discovery Center or a meal.

The other difference is intensity of a different kind. Dark Universe at Epic Universe runs fog, low light and roaming costumed monsters in the street, and Monsters Unchained is closer to a haunted attraction than a family dark ride. A child who cleared the 48-inch stick and loved everything else can be genuinely frightened there. Islands of Adventure has no equivalent — its hardest content is physical rather than psychological.

The coaster question, settled

This is the part of the comparison where people expect the new park to win and it does not.

Islands of Adventure fields four coasters and three of them are serious rides. Epic Universe fields two. That gap is not about age or investment — it is a design choice, because Epic Universe spent its budget on longer, more elaborate, more technically complex attractions rather than on a deep thrill bench.

If forces are the criterion, the table below is the whole argument.

The campus problem is the real cost of Epic Universe

Epic Universe sits on its own land a short drive south of the original resort. That single fact costs more than any ride comparison on this page.

The two original parks share a campus with CityWalk between them. You can walk from Islands of Adventure to Universal Studios Florida in about ten minutes, ride the Hogwarts Express between them with a park-to-park ticket, and go back to a walkway hotel for two hours in the middle of the day without touching a vehicle. None of that reaches Epic Universe. Getting there is the resort shuttle bus, a car into Epic's own parking structure, or a rideshare.

In practice that means three things. You cannot park-hop into or out of Epic Universe on a whim, so the day has to be committed to in advance. You lose thirty to sixty minutes at each end of the day to the transfer, which is time that does not appear on any itinerary anyone writes. And the shuttle queue at closing is the single worst transport moment of a Universal Orlando trip, because a park's entire evening crowd arrives at one loading area within twenty minutes.

None of that makes the park a bad choice. It makes it a choice with an overhead, and the overhead is roughly a fifth of the useful hours in the day. Islands of Adventure carries no equivalent tax, which is a real part of why it holds up against a park built twenty-six years later.

If you can only do one of them

Most one-day visitors are choosing between these two parks and Universal Studios Florida, and the choice between these two is the harder half of it.

Take Epic Universe if this is your first Universal Orlando trip, if you want the newest thing in American theme parks, if your group has anyone in the 40-to-47-inch band, if food matters to you, or if you can stay until closing and want the park after dark.

Take Islands of Adventure if anyone came for coasters, if your group is all over 51 inches, if you are staying on the walkable campus and want to go back to the hotel mid-afternoon, if you have a Premier hotel room with Express Unlimited included, or if you have a child under 40 inches and want Seuss Landing rather than a rider-swap day.

A quiet tiebreak: if you are visiting in July or August without Express Pass, Islands of Adventure loses more of its ride list to an afternoon lightning hold than Epic Universe does, because more of what you came for is outdoors. That flips a hot-month decision toward Epic more often than people expect.

With two days, do Epic first. It asks more of your legs, it rewards being fresh, and it has the entry system you want to hit early. Islands of Adventure the following day works better tired than Epic Universe does, because single rider lines carry a tired group in a way sequencing discipline does not.

  1. First Universal Orlando trip, one day: Epic Universe.
  2. Coaster trip, any number of days: Islands of Adventure first.
  3. Child in the 40-to-47-inch band: Epic Universe.
  4. Child under 40 inches: Islands of Adventure, for Seuss Landing.
  5. Premier hotel room with Express Unlimited included: Islands of Adventure, to use what you already paid for.
  6. Two days: Epic Universe on day one, Islands of Adventure on day two.

What would change this comparison

Epic Universe is still a young park, and comparisons involving young parks age badly. It is worth naming what is unsettled.

The entry system at SUPER NINTENDO WORLD. It has been a virtual queue, a timed entry, and an open door on different days since the park opened. If that settles into an open door permanently, Epic Universe's worst friction point disappears and its day gets meaningfully better.

Express Pass coverage. The attraction list Express covers at Epic Universe has moved since opening and is not necessarily the same as at the older parks. Confirm it at the point of purchase rather than trusting anything written more than a few months ago, including this page.

Ride availability. New parks run new hardware, and new hardware goes down. Epic Universe's headliners are more technically complex than Islands of Adventure's coasters and there are fewer of them, so a single closure costs a larger share of the day here.

What will not change: the campus. Epic Universe is not going to become walkable from CityWalk, and Islands of Adventure is not going to stop being ten minutes from Universal Studios Florida. The geography is permanent and it is the most durable item on this page.

So which one is yours?

Pick Universal Epic Universe if…

  • It is your first Universal Orlando trip and you want the newest park in the country.
  • Somebody in your group is between 40 and 47 inches, where this park has five attractions and the other has very few.
  • You care about eating well inside a theme park.
  • You can stay until closing, because the last two hours here are the best two hours.
  • You would rather have ten elaborate attractions than thirty varied ones.

Pick Islands of Adventure if…

  • Anyone in the group came to Orlando for roller coasters.
  • You want Jurassic World VelociCoaster, which is the best coaster in Florida and has no equal at Epic Universe.
  • You are staying on the walkable campus and want a midday hotel break without a shuttle.
  • Your Premier hotel room already includes Universal Express Unlimited.
  • You have a child under 40 inches and want Seuss Landing rather than a day of rider swap.

Frequently asked questions

Is Epic Universe better than Islands of Adventure?

For ride technology and design coherence, yes. For roller coasters and roster depth, no — Islands of Adventure has about 30 attractions to Epic Universe's 21, four coasters to two, and Jurassic World VelociCoaster, which is the best coaster in Florida. Epic Universe is the better single day; Islands of Adventure is the better second day for anyone who came for coasters.

Can you walk between Epic Universe and Islands of Adventure?

No. Epic Universe is on a separate campus a short drive south of the original resort. The CityWalk walkway and the Hogwarts Express both stop at the two original parks. Getting to Epic Universe means the resort shuttle bus, driving to its own parking structure, or a rideshare, and that transfer needs building into both ends of the day.

Which has better height requirements for children?

Epic Universe, clearly. Seven attractions carry a requirement and the tallest is 48 inches. At Islands of Adventure fourteen do, the tallest is 54 inches, and all five headliners need 48 inches or more. The 40-to-48-inch band is where the difference bites hardest — Epic Universe has five attractions in it and Islands of Adventure has very few.

Does Epic Universe have better rides?

It has longer and more technically ambitious ones. Islands of Adventure has more of them and better roller coasters. If you rank on the individual attraction, Epic Universe wins; if you rank on how many good things you ride in a day, Islands of Adventure does. Both readings are defensible and they produce opposite answers.

Which park should I do first?

Epic Universe, if you are doing both. It asks more of your legs, it rewards arriving fresh, and SUPER NINTENDO WORLD's entry system is the one thing you cannot fix later in the day. Islands of Adventure carries a tired group better because six single rider lines do the work that careful sequencing has to do at Epic Universe.

Is Epic Universe worth a full day?

Yes, and it needs one. The attraction count is lower than at any other Orlando park, but the hub-and-spoke layout, the walking distances and the wait times consume the day. Anyone treating it as a half-day add-on will see two of the five worlds and spend the rest of the time in queues.

Does Express Pass work at both parks?

It is sold at both. The hotel route differs: Universal Express Unlimited included with a Premier hotel room has covered Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure, and coverage at Epic Universe has moved since that park opened. Confirm what your purchase or your room actually includes at Epic Universe rather than assuming. Hagrid's at Islands of Adventure accepts no Express product at all.

Which park is scarier?

Epic Universe, for a specific kind of fear. Dark Universe runs fog, low light and roaming costumed monsters in the street, and Monsters Unchained is closer to a haunted attraction than a family dark ride. Islands of Adventure's hardest content is physical — big coasters and an 85-foot drop — rather than psychological. Judge Dark Universe on content, not on whether your child clears the height stick.
